An Overview of Poker Game Rules: Texas Holdem

Some poker game rules can be rather complicated. But that’s not true about Texas Holdem. The fact that Texas Holdem rules are fairly simple and easy to learn has helped make the game extremely popular amongst online poker players. Understanding the rules is the first step towards becoming a savvy player who can play to win.

Poker Game Rules: Texas Holdem Basic Outline

The poker game rules for dealing Texas Holdem are fairly simple and easy to learn. First, each player receives two hole cards from a 52-card deck. Hole cards are called such because they are dealt face down and the only person who sees those cards is the one who will be playing them.

The hole cards are the first two of a total of seven cards that will be dealt. The other five cards are community cards that are dealt in the center of the table face up. Each player uses a combination of his/her seven cards to make the best five-card hand possible.

Poker Game Rules: Texas Holdem Blinds and Dealer

The dealer, who is the final person to wager, sits to the right of the player who will post the small blind. To left of the person who posts the small blind is the player who puts up the big blind.

The small blind is usually half the minimum bet and the big blind is the full minimum bet. As the minimums at the table increase so too do the blinds.

During the game, each player gets to be the dealer as the position, which is designated by the dealer button, moves around the table from right to left. Thus, the last person to post the small blind is the dealer in the next hand.

Blinds are posted and, if the rules of a specific game dictate it, all players must ante.

Hole Cards and First Round Betting

Each player receives his/her two hole cards. After the cards are dealt, according to poker game rules, the first round of betting commences with the player directly to the left of the person who posted the big blind wagering first. The betting goes from right to left.

Players either have to match the big blind, fold or raise. A raise occurs when someone bets more than the big blind. Usually up to three raises are allowed per round of betting.

To stay in the hand, players must match the raise or raise again. If they elect not to match the bet, then according to the rules they must fold. Once the betting sequence is complete, which would be when there are no more raises left and all bets are placed or hands are folded, cards are dealt.

The Flop and Second Round of Betting

The flop is dealt face up. The first three community cards are in the flop. After the flop, the second sequence of betting occurs. Betting starts with the first player to the left of the dealer who is still in the hand wagering.

Each player may either check, bet, raise or fold. As it is with other poker game rules, in Holdem once a player bets, no further checking is allowed in this round of betting. All players must do one of three things—match the bet, fold, or raise the bet. Three raises are allowed in this round.

Once all players have checked, bet or folded, it’s time to deal the next card.

The Turn and Third Round of Betting

With the turn, which is also known as fourth street, one community card is dealt face up. The third round of wagering starts. Once again according to the rules of this poker game, all players must do one of four things—check, match the bet, fold, or raise the bet. Three raises are allowed in this round.

Once all players have checked, bet or folded, it’s time to deal the next card.

The River and The Showdown

With the river, which is also known as fifth street, the final community card is dealt face up. The fourth round of wagering starts in what is known as the showdown. No matter what the poker game rules of a particular game may be, there is always a showdown. Once again, all players must do one of three things—match the bet, fold, or raise the bet. Three raises are allowed in this round.

Once the wagering is done, the players show their cards. According to Texas holdem rules and the rules of all other games of poker, if all but one player folds, then that final player automatically wins the pot and does not have to show his/her cards.

Players that stay in the hand and lose may elect to muck their hands, which means that they don’t reveal their losing hands. If two or more players are left in the hand, then the winning player must reveal their hand.

The next round starts with the dealer button moving one player to the left, the blinds being posted, and the cards being shuffled and dealt.

Poker Game Rules: Differences

Omaha and Omaha Hi Lo are dealt in a manner similar to Texas Holdem, as both of these games also feature community cards. But Stud games are different due to the fact that they do not have community cards. Each does have numerous hole cards, and players also hold cards that everyone can see. However, unlike community cards in Holdem that are shared, the exposed cards in Stud are played by the individual players who hold them.

With 5 Card Stud after the ante, one card is dealt down and another up. There is a round of betting and then another card is dealt up followed by another round of wagering. A fourth card is dealt face up and betting commences again. Finally, the fifth card, which is also face up, is dealt, and the final round of betting is held.

The rules for the poker game 7 Card Stud are similar to 5 Card. However after the ante, players receive two cards down and one up and the final card is dealt face down. There is one additional round of betting in 7 Card Stud.
